I have a friend whose work is slightly different from all of us.
She doesn't hold a 9-5 corporate job and neither is she a retired tai-tai (not yet lah).
She is a singer. a singer in hong kong.
what kind of singer?
I am not talking about one year one month July singer lah! (u think 883 arh?)
I am also not talking about uncle-'pou' (cantonese = hangout) night clubs!
She is a singer who works with big shots like Jackie Chen, Zhen Ziwei before...
She is a singer who has release 8 albums...
She is a singer who has fans in HK...
She is a singer who goes Genting to open concert and expanding to Toronto as well...
Well, after being here for 2months, I have been wanting to email her, but din't get down to doing it, until i saw her name on my facebook profile page. I checked that out with lots of suspicion, suspicious that this might just be a fan-made profile. One of the things to check is the mutual friends tab, which all ties, those are really our classmates, so high chance this is the real her.
So, i facebook msg her. She replied, asking for my hp number. Like a mummy well-taught girl who cannot any-o-how give out phone number, I was VERY cautious!
I racked through my gmail for her email address and emailed her my number instead! Coz if she is the same person, she will then know what I am talking about on facebook.
N next day, i got her sms lah!
She is free the coming Saturday, so we meet up lah!
Since we stay pretty near and Elementz is in the midway between our houses, we decided to meet up there. I am happy about it coz i like Elementz and wanna chill out at that shoppng mall! Btw, it is the same mall with W Hotel linked through to it, where Van Ness Wu stayed during his recent HK trip!
Well, i cut short my Disneyland day, skipped the fireworks n we met up at about 9pm at a Japanese restaurant! Perfect! Give me jap food anytime man! Tell u, Jap food in HK standard is vastly different from SG's! Here, even a shop that looks more lok-pok than the Green Frog Sushi (see, 2 months is enough for me to forget the chain's name!) serves better quality raw cuts and sushi! If you go more atas, pay the price of Sushi Tei or Warakuu, you get fish freshness very close to those in Japan! I am serious! You feel so worthy to pay the price and get the quality, unlike in SG! *BOo!
No wonder the queue for this shop is Looooong. Have you ever held a number 183 and the current is 140?!?! O______o I still have SG mentality and really feel it is worth the wait. The building mgmt is also very kind and thoughtful to plant rotten wooden stumbs outside the shop for ppl queuing and waiting to rest their tired feets. They are really big big stumbs all linked together with plants and all, so much space, enough for most of us to get a break while waiting. I mean this is thoughtful or wat right? In SG, the seats are so limited and all taken up by mums in pushtram, which we feel so obliged and no filial piety not to give up our precious seat, or maids, who are out roaming the streets for nothing better to do cos it is so stiffling hot outdoors. I can't understand why so limited seats. If they have more seats, shoppers can get good rest and continue to shop and swipe cards in shops right? crazy logic which i don't understand, that's why I am out of SG!
She arrives, walked up to me, I was still busy fuzzing my camera. Hey, i was glad to see her after such a long time. VJC days are like 9 years back. OMG! I am getting old or what?! She looks about the same as before. haha. nothing too different, i hope me too!
Since we are still miles away from getting our seats, she suggested to go starbucks for coffee first. Great! I like chilling out in Starbucks! Got our cuppa and sat to chat - old friends, schools, work, life, decision to come hk, disneyland, her singing, schedule, paparazzi etc..
We called to check the number and we are in time! Back we went.. Another few moments of waiting before table.
All these while, being engrossed in the conversation as I can be, I noticed passersby walking pass us turn their heads looking at her. Hahah.. She has a cap covering part of her right face, but people can still see her lah. Those who recognize will stare for a moment, think in their brains, flipping through memories of dramawiki surfing, confirm its her, then eye balls grow big! hahaahha...
They got us a seat at the end, maybe for more privacy, rather than seats at the front.
The waitresses were all poised and calm, no big reaction, but I can tell they all can recognize her, coz they speak siliently into the mouthpiece, like passing message around to coworkers. But i am sure they are used to it liao lah. It is Hong Kong leh!!! Stars dine out safely with no airs! unlike Sg ones. I only bump into a DJ before, not Nick lah.. hahaha..
Anyway, there wasn't any preferential treatment, which is good, coz don't know why, maybe as a friend for so long, despite lazy no contact, we are Friends! Friends and friends having dinner is no big deal lo. I don't feel any star effect or any dizzyness in my head. Funny enough, I feel she is just a person, not as divine as we see on magazines. They are just humans afterall and we get down to that fact, seeing them in person, beyond movies, mtvs or songs, they are just a person like you and me.
Having said that, it doesn't mean if Van Ness hang out with me, i won't be breathless.
There again, who i like is not Van Ness, but Ren-Guang-Xi in Next Stop, Happiness, who is portrayed by him. They are 2 separate beings - one real and another fake or fictional.
Conclusion is Dining with a Star is no big deal if you know you have the next chance, next chance and the next and doesn't matter if you don't have the next chance anymore.
You know what i mean?
Life is a matter of chance, opportunity and talent. - read from a good book.
If you have the next chance, then no need to be too excited or breathless with what's going on today.
We know we have tomorrow, so we are not too excited about today!
We know we have to work tomorrow, so we are not excited at ALL!
If we know we have a day off for vacation, we are excited!
If we know we can Dine with a beloved movie star, we are excited!
At the end, it's the opportunity that counts in this situation.
The chance of being classmate with a future star, the opportunity to be in the same
country, she has the talent, me? *stop dead on the track
makes me wonder these few days, what is my talent and how can i use it.
this may well be the same question i am going to ask myself for years to come... hope to find an answer soon...
